What is Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll powder supplements do not exist in nature. They are derived from the compound chlorophyll.

The word chlorophyll comes from the Greek words chloros and phyllon meaning “green leaf.”

  • It is the pigment that gives plants and algae their green color
  • Chlorophyll in plants helps plants use the sun as an energy source. Plants will make nutrients from the sun, a process known as photosynthesis
  • Chlorophyll is also needed to activate enzymes in plants to help them grow and thrive

What Is Chlorophyll Made Of?

Chlorophyll is made up of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and magnesium and exists in at least five different forms.

Chlorophyll A and Chlorophyll B

We are most concerned with chlorophyll A (α-chlorophyll) and chlorophyll B (β-chlorophyll).

These are fat-soluble chlorophylls in plants. They are similar in structure but absorb different light during photosynthesis.

Chlorophyll A is the main pigment involved in photosynthesis. It also prevents plants from getting ultraviolet light damage from the sun. Chlorophyll B is the accessory pigment needed to make chlorophyll A work.

Chlorophyll A absorbs red light and Chlorophyll B absorbs blue light. That is why plants appear to be green in color [R].

Magnesium in Chlorophyll

Magnesium is an important nutrient in chlorophyll. It sits at the center of the structure and is needed to carry out photosynthesis. Just like humans, plants rely on this nutrient for adequate metabolism and growth [R].

Chlorophyll pills and chlorophyll tablets are quick and easy ways to take chlorophyll if you are not someone who can drink green liquids.

Chlorophyllin vs Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll powder and other chlorophyll supplements contain chlorophyllin. [R]. Chlorophyllin derived from naturally occurring chlorophyll but also semi-synthetic due to the addition of sodium copper salts. These copper salts replace the magnesium that is at the center of the chlorophyll molecule. Additionally, chlorophyllin is water-soluble making it more digestible [R].

Despite this change in structure, chlorophyllin offers the same health benefits of chlorophyll.

Benefits of Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is a good source of antioxidants, essential vitamins, and nutrients. It also has the ability to protect against the sun’s ultraviolet rays. These properties make it a powerful nutritive substance. There are many health claims for chlorophyll powder and other supplements. Learn if they are beneficial for good health.

Chlorophyll for Red Blood Cell Production

Chlorophyll is thought to possibly build up red blood cell production. Red blood cells are needed to help carry oxygen and give cells energy.

Chlorophyll is similar in structure to the protein hemoglobin that is found in red blood cells. Hemoglobin carries oxygen to the cells.

Consumption of chlorophyll-rich juices such as wheatgrass (70% chlorophyll) may be helpful to reduce the number of blood transfusions needed in people with thalassemia, a blood disorder [R].

Researchers found that it may actually be other components in the wheat juice that improved outcomes especially since the chlorophyll is destroyed when the wheatgrass is juiced [R].

Further research in this area needs to uncover what may actually be improving blood cell production.

Antioxidant effects

Chlorophyllin has been found to work as an antioxidant in animal studies. This suggests it could prevent oxidative damage. More human testing needs to be done to learn the true anti-oxidant effects of these supplements [R].

Chlorophyll Benefits for Skin

Chlorophyll has been found to benefit skin health. It has been said to help with wound healing, anti-aging, and improve acne.

Wound Healing

Chlorophyllin has been researched for its wound healing properties since the 1940s. Several studies have reported that chlorophyllin ointments are effective in wound healing [R].

A 2008 review showed improvements with the application of topical treatments containing chlorophyllin. Inflammation and bacterial growth were reduced in skin wounds when compared with other treatments. Pain and healing time also decreased by 50 percent with these treatments. [R].

Anti-aging

Chrlophyll’s antioxidant properties play a role in preventing oxidative damage to the skin and reduce wrinkles.

A chlorophyll extract supplement was found to improve collagen production and elasticity in females over 45 years of age when used for 90 days [R].

Topical treatments containing chlorophyllin to the skin reduced signs of sun damage in healthy women for 12 days [R].

Chlorophyllin worked as well as tretinoin, a prescription treatment used to prevent skin aging [R].

Improve Acne

Chlorophyllin may also help to improve mild to moderate acne.

The use of a topical chlorophyllin gel showed reduced face acne and large pores after three weeks of use [R].

Better skin improvements were seen when using a combination of topical chlorophyll and phototherapy when compared with phototherapy treatment alone. Though effective this study was quite small in size and focused on only one population of people [R].

Research has not shown the true benefits of anti-aging from chlorophyll supplements. More research needs to be done to see long term results.

Chlorophyll for Weight Loss

Chlorophyll has been promoted for its weight loss benefits.

One study found individuals taking a green-plant membrane containing chlorophyll for 90 days had more weight loss than those who took a placebo [R].

While somewhat beneficial, more research needs to be done on to see if there are long term weight loss benefits of chlorophyll supplements.

Chlorophyll for Body Odor

Chlorophyllin has been studied as a deodorizer since the 1940s. Topical chlorophyllin was found to neutralize foul-smelling wounds.

Further research showed mixed results concluding that chlorophyllin was not any more effective than a placebo at controlling odors [R].

A more recent study showed 60 mg doses of oral chlorophyllin three times a day over a six week period was helpful at neutralizing a “fishy” or foul odor by reducing trimethylamine concentrations in those with trimethylaminuria, a condition that causes a fishy odor [R].

While helpful for some odors more research needs to be done to see if this can actually work as a deodorizer.

Chlorophyll for Bad Breath

With its reputation as a natural deodorizer neutralizing properties, chlorophyll has been recommended as an oral mouth freshener.

Aside from the studies done in the 1940s, there is no actual research to back up claims that chlorophyll will help improve bad breath.

Chlorophyll for Increased Energy

Some websites have praised chlorophyllin and chlorophyll water for its ability to boost energy levels but there is no hard research to back this up.

Chlorophyll is a plant that contains nutrients and antioxidants which improve energy production.

There is some debate as to whether or not both chlorophyll and chlorophyllin is actually absorbed. Some research says there is no need for chlorophyll in the diet and that it cannot be absorbed by the body [R, R].

The lack of toxicity of this substance leads us to believe that it is poorly absorbed [R].

On the other hand, significant amounts of copper chlorin were found in blood levels after the consumption of chlorophyllin tablets. This indicates that absorption did occur.

More research needs to be carried out to find the true bioavailability of chlorophyll powder and other chlorophyll supplements.

Chlorophyll For Hormonal Balance

Hormone balance is said to be a benefit of chlorophyll. There are no studies showing the benefits of chlorophyll on hormone balance. This is an area that needs further research.

Chlorophyll As An Anti-Inflammatory

Chlorophyll has been said to help with arthritis and fibromyalgia relief. To date, there are no specific studies showing the benefits of these conditions.

One study showed reductions in gut inflammation and rebalanced gut bacteria in mice when given chlorophyllin drinking water. Liver scarring was also reduced after chlorophyllin consumption [R].

This is promising but we do not know if these results can be duplicated in humans.

Side Effects of Chlorophyll 2400

Both natural chlorophyll and synthetic chlorophyllin have been found to be safe for most individuals with no toxic effects. It is possibly safe when taken by mouth daily for up to 3 months.

Side effects reported with the consumption of these substances include the following [R]:

  • Green urine and feces
  • Black stools
  • Yellow or black tongue
  • Diarrhea
  • Mild burning or itching associated with topical treatments

Oral chlorophyllin may also result in false-positive results for stool samples.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid this supplement since there is not enough research on its overall effects in this population [R].

Chlorophyllin applied to the skin will make it more sensitive to the sun.

Chlorophyllin may be safe for most people but more research is needed to know its true effects.

Look for a supplement that is from a reputable company that does third party testing. Always buy from a reputable supplement store that knows the purity of their supplements.

Be sure the products that are free of additives and fillers.

David E. Williams, a professor of cancer prevention in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University who has researched chlorophyllin in rodents, rainbow trout, and humans, said he doesn’t see a downside to supplementation. “Safety-wise, or toxicity-wise, I don’t think of any problems with chlorophyllin because it’s been used for over 50 years in humans, clinically for different things, and also as a food dye, with no evidence of harm.”

How To Take Chlorophyll Powder and Other Supplements

There is no defined safe upper limit for chlorophyll powder and other supplements. It has been suggested the dose depends on various factors such as the user’s age, health, and possible medications.

Some experts have said that taking a dose between 100 and 300 mg per day is considered safe, however, there is not enough research to really know when toxicity starts [R].

Eat Chlorophyll Rich Foods to Get Chlorophyll

An easy way to get more chlorophyll in the diet is to eat chlorophyll-rich foods. Since chlorophylls are the most abundant pigment in plants consuming more vegetables can help increase your chlorophyll intake.

Chlorophyll rich foods include the following:

  • Dark, leafy vegetables like spinach
  • Parsley
  • Green beans
  • Arugula
  • Endive
  • Sugar Peas
  • Chinese Cabbage
  • Garden cress
  • Leeks
